Kanan Labs

I'm James Williams. Kanan Labs is part open source lab, part small consultancy—a place for building software, running experiments, and taking on the occasional interesting project. The name comes from Kananaskis, the provincial park bordering my hometown of Priddis, Alberta.

My interests and capabilities include:

Software development, database design, and systems architecture
Data pipelines—acquisition, analysis, and reporting
GIS and mapping
Workflow automation and integration

I care about software that's secure, portable, and fun to use, not just useful. Most of my work is exploratory: prototyping ideas, testing assumptions, and building toward a less commercial and less predatory internet. Technology should empower people, not subjugate them.

I'm open to partnerships on the right project, but I'm not currently soliciting client work.
