Kanan Labs

I'm James Williams. Kanan Labs is part open source lab, part small consultancy—a place for building experimental software and taking on the occasional interesting project. The name comes from Kananaskis, the provincial park bordering my hometown of Priddis, Alberta.

My interests and capabilities include:

Software development, database design, and systems architecture
Data pipelines from acquisition to analysis to reporting
GIS and mapping
Workflow automation and integration

Most of my work here is exploratory and will never see the light of day, but I'm interested in building business software that is open, secure, local-first, and portable. Consumer software should be useful and non-extractive in every respect. Technology should empower people, not subjugate them.

I'm open to partnerships on the right project, but I'm not currently soliciting client work.
